Creamy Chocolate Chia Smoothie

Last Updated: May 25, 2026

This creamy chocolate chia smoothie is easy to make and delicious. Give it a try if you’re looking for recipes using chia seeds, like this rich and creamy chia chocolate mousse, which is one of my favorite treats.

Ingredients and Substitutions

You can use either black or white chia seeds in this smoothie. I went with black this time. If you have trouble finding them at your local stores, they’re widely available online.

I sweetened this smoothie with a couple of pitted dates. You can substitute a ripe banana, 1 cup of berries, or any type of chopped fruit you like.

Cocoa powder gives this smoothie its delicious chocolate flavor. Raw cacao powder works too.

You can use any type of unsweetened milk you like in this smoothie. I went with soy milk this time.

I usually add a pinch of sea salt to smoothies to balance the sweetness. You can omit it if you prefer.

How to Make a Chocolate Chia Smoothie

Start by adding the chia seeds and cold water to a blender, then let rest for 20 minutes to soften the chia seeds. Next you’ll add the pitted dates, unsweetened milk of choice, cocoa powder, and sea salt to the blender, then blend until smooth.

For the best texture, enjoy right away. If stored in the fridge, the chia seeds will cause the smoothie to thicken over time.
