This dark chocolate orange mousse is such a simple and delicious dessert. It’s perfect if you need an egg-free, dairy-free, or vegan option. Give this recipe a try if you’re in the mood for a nutritious homemade treat, like these hazelnut butter cups, which are another one of my favorites.
Ingredients and Substitutions
This easy recipe calls for whole oranges— there’s no zesting or juice-squeezing required! Just a rough chop and then they get added to a blender. I love the simplicity of it.

Dark chocolate works best in this mousse. I don’t recommend using other types of chocolate because sweeter varieties such as milk or white chocolate are more likely to seize and give the mousse a gritty texture.
For the best results, choose a brand of dark chocolate that contains between 70 and 85 percent cacao solids. That ratio usually has the perfect amount of sweetness. I don’t recommend using entirely unsweetened chocolate such as baker’s chocolate because the mousse would not be sweet enough in that case.
How to Make Dark Chocolate Orange Mousse (Without Eggs or Dairy!)
Add the roughly chopped oranges, room temperature water, vanilla extract, and salt to a high-powered blender, then blend until smooth.

Melt the chopped dark chocolate using your preferred method:
Stovetop: Add the chopped dark chocolate to a pan over low heat. Stir constantly until just melted, then remove from the heat. Microwave: Heat in 20-second bursts, stirring between each, until melted.
Transfer the melted chocolate to the blender, then blend until smooth (make sure that no chunks of orange peel remain).

Transfer the mixture to a bowl or container, then chill for at least 1 hour, or until thickened to a mousse-like consistency.
