This chocolate black bean smoothie is packed with nutrients but tastes like a creamy and delicious milkshake. You’d never guess this smoothie is made with black beans. You really can’t taste them at all! This smoothie is perfect for breakfast or a snack on-the-go.
Ingredients and Substitutions
I like to use canned black beans when making this smoothie, but you can substitute cooked dried black beans if you prefer. If using canned, make sure to drain and thoroughly rinse the black beans before adding them to the blender.

For the best results, use a ripe banana when making this smoothie. If your banana is underripe, the end result wonโt be quite as sweet.
Cocoa powder gives this smoothie its chocolaty kick and masks the flavor of the black beans completely. You can substitute cacao powder or a few squares of melted dark chocolate if you prefer.
I like to sweeten this smoothie with maple syrup. You can omit the maple syrup if you prefer a lower sugar option. Or you can sweeten the smoothie to taste using any type of sweetener you like.
I used unsweetened soy milk in this smoothie, but you can substitute any type of unsweetened milk you prefer. Or if you only have sweetened plant-based milk, you can use it, but in that case be sure to omit the maple syrup.
How to Make a Black Bean Smoothie
Start by breaking the banana into pieces, then add it to a blender. Add the plant-based milk, black beans, cocoa powder, and maple syrup to the blender.
Blend until smooth.
Enjoy right away or store this smoothie in the fridge for up to three days, then stir before serving.
