This chocolate orange smoothie is bursting with flavor. I love the combination of fresh, tangy orange and earthy, slightly bitter chocolate. This smoothie is a must-try if you’re an orange chocolate lover like me.
Ingredients and Substitutions
You can use any type of orange you like in this smoothie. I used a navel orange this time. And definitely don’t skip the zest. It adds a huge boost of orange flavor to this smoothie.

Cocoa powder gives this smoothie its chocolate flavor. I used natural cocoa powder, but Dutch-process cocoa or raw cacao powder works too.
I like to add one date to this smoothie to sweeten it up a bit. You can omit the date if you prefer, but in that case the smoothie will only be subtly sweet.
You can use any type of unsweetened milk you like in this smoothie. I went with soy milk this time.
I like to include vanilla extract and a small pinch of sea salt to enhance the chocolate orange flavor of this smoothie. You can omit the vanilla and sea salt if you prefer.
How to Make a Chocolate Orange Smoothie
Start by using a citrus zester or fine grater to remove about half the zest from the orange, then add the zest to a blender. Next you’ll peel the orange, roughly chop it, then add it to the blender.
Remove the pit from the date, then add it to the blender. Next you’ll add the cocoa powder, unsweetened milk of choice, sea salt, and vanilla extract to the blender.
Blend until smooth.
