This homemade Paleo bbq sauce is smoky, sweet, and tangy. It’s refined sugar free and sweetened only with dates. This sauce is easy to make and pairs well with these high-protein black bean burgers, or any of your favorite barbecue dishes.
Ingredients and Substitutions
When I noticed dried ground chipotle peppers in the spice aisle at my local grocery store, I knew they’d be perfect in this barbecue sauce. If you can’t find them at the grocery store, you can easily order some online. They add just the right amount of smoky, spicy flavor to this sauce.

This barbecue sauce is naturally sweetened with dates. Dates add a neutral sweetness that balances the other flavors nicely.
Tomato paste adds plenty of umami flavor to the sauce. It also helps thicken the sauce nicely.
Garlic powder and onion powder complement the other flavors in this sauce. You can substitute finely chopped fresh garlic (or jarred garlic) if you prefer.
I like to use apple cider vinegar in this sauce. You can substitute any type of vinegar you prefer.
Homemade Paleo BBQ Sauce Recipe Instructions
