Ingredients and substitutions
I like to use fresh clementine oranges when making these treats, because their segments are bite sized which makes them easy to eat and perfect for parties. You can use any other type of orange you prefer (but I don’t recommend using frozen or canned oranges).
I like using dark chocolate because the subtle bitterness contrasts so nicely with the bright, tangy flavor of the oranges. You can substitute any type of chocolate you prefer.
Fresh orange zest really boosts the orangey flavor of these chocolate dipped oranges. You can omit the zest if you’re in a hurry but I definitely recommend including it if possible.
How to make them
Start by adding the chocolate chips to a pot on the stove set to low heat. Stir constantly until the chocolate has melted and there are no solid lumps remaining, then remove the pot from the heat and transfer the melted chocolate to a bowl. Alternatively you can melt the chocolate in the microwave if you prefer.
Use a grater or zester to remove the zest from one of the oranges, then reserve. Next you’ll peel the oranges and gently pull the segments apart to separate them.
Dip an orange segment halfway in melted chocolate, place it on a plate lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, then immediately sprinkle on a pinch of orange zest.
Repeat with the rest of the orange segments.
Place the plate of chocolate oranges in the fridge to harden for at least 45 minutes before serving.
Storage
Store the chocolate dipped oranges in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
