Tahini Frosting (Easy Recipe)

Last Updated: September 22, 2026

I’ve tested many different nutritious frosting recipes over the years, and this chocolate tahini frosting is one of my favorites. I particularly love using it to ice this chocolate oat flour cake. It has a rich, gooey consistency similar to a fudge frosting. This tahini icing also happens to be vegan, refined-sugar-free, and Paleo-diet-friendly.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Tahini is a paste made from ground sesame seeds. It has a rich, velvety consistency and a nutty flavor that works beautifully in this frosting. Tahini is usually available at regular grocery stores.

Cocoa powder gives this frosting its chocolate flavor. You can use any type of unsweetened cocoa powder you like. Raw cacao powder works too.

This refined sugar-free frosting is sweetened with maple syrup. You can substitute agave nectar if you prefer.

A small amount of salt enhances the other flavors in this tahini icing nicely. You can omit it if you prefer.

How to Make Tahini Frosting

Start by adding the tahini, maple syrup, cocoa powder, and salt to a mixing bowl. Mix until the cocoa powder is completely dissolved and the frosting thickens to a spreadable consistency.

Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes before using to frost cakes, cupcakes, cookies, or donuts.
