Creamy Hemp Heart Smoothie

Last Updated: June 21, 2026

This hemp heart smoothie is creamy, delicious, and perfect for a filling breakfast on the go. Give it a try if you’re looking for nutrient-packed drinks, like this date and avocado smoothie, which is another yummy option.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Hemp hearts are the shelled inner part of the hemp seed. I love incorporating them into all sorts of recipes (like this hemp dressing) because they’re a good source of plant-based complete protein. If you have trouble finding them at your local grocery stores, they’re often available at health food stores, or you can easily order them online.

You can use any type of unsweetened milk you like in this smoothie. I went with soy milk this time.

Cocoa powder gives this smoothie a delicious chocolate flavor that balances the earthiness of the hemp hearts. You can use raw cacao powder instead, or you can substitute 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract if you prefer.

Banana adds creaminess and sweetness to this smoothie. You can substitute 3/4 cup of berries or any type of chopped fruit you prefer.

I like to add a little extra sweetness to this smoothie by including one pitted date. You can omit the date for a lower sugar version, in which case the smoothie will be only subtly sweet.

How to Make a Hemp Heart Smoothie

Add the hemp hearts, banana, cocoa powder, unsweetened milk of choice, and date (optional) to a blender. Blend until smooth.

  1. I love this smoothie. It’s a delicious way to get a good serving of hemp hearts in one liquid meal. I also enjoy using carob powder in place of cocoa. Thank you!
