Healthy bbq sauce that’s made at home with simple ingredients is so much better than the store bought stuff. I love barbecue sauce, but it’s one of those high sugar condiments that I typically avoid. Not anymore! My bbq sauce recipe is refined sugar free, so in my opinion it’s a healthier choice. This barbecue sauce is sweet, smoky, tangy, and bursting with flavour. Use it on chicken, ribs, steak, burgers, veggies, tofu, etc. So many possibilities.

When I noticed dried chipotle peppers in the spice aisle at my local grocery store, I knew they’d be perfect in this healthy barbecue sauce. They add just the right amount of smoky, spicy flavour to this recipe.

Healthy BBQ Sauce Recipe


1/2 cup tomato paste
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar (or substitute any vinegar you prefer)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
3/4 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon dried ground chipotle chili pepper
4 tablespoons date paste


Add all ingredients to a bowl and stir until combined. Store in an airtight container in the fridge. Makes just under one cup of healthy bbq sauce.
