This homemade, refined sugar free, paleo bbq sauce recipe is made with simple ingredients and turned out well. I love barbecue sauce, but it’s one of those high sugar condiments that I typically avoid.
I definitely prefer this recipe to most of the store bought kinds I’ve tried. This barbecue sauce is sweet, smoky, tangy, and full of flavour. Use it on chicken, ribs, steak, burgers, veggies, tofu, etc. So many possibilities.
When I noticed dried chipotle peppers in the spice aisle at the grocery store, I suspected they’d be perfect in this bbq sauce. They add just the right amount of smoky, spicy flavour to this recipe.
Main ingredients in this paleo BBQ sauce
I usually keep this recipe pretty simple, but if you want to take this sauce to the next level there are a few additional flavourings you could add to this refined sugar free bbq sauce.
One really delicious addition would be caramelized onions. Just sauté some chopped onions in a pan in a bit of olive oil until they’re dark golden brown, then stir them into the barbecue sauce. It’s absolutely delicious.
Another addition for those who like their bbq sauce spicy would be some fresh jalapeños or any chilli peppers you prefer. Leave the seeds in for tons of extra spice or remove the seeds if you like it a bit milder.
Or add a teaspoon of freshly grated lime zest to the barbecue sauce to add a bit of zing and fresh citrusy flavour that will compliment the tangy sweetness of the sauce.
Fresh garlic instead of garlic powder would be a nice touch too, I just opted for the powder this time to keep things super quick and easy.
This paleo bbq sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. I like to make it in advance and have it ready to go when I feel like barbecuing.
